About Shakti
Shakti Malan, founder of the Shakti Shiva Academy, was an internationally recognized teacher of Tantra and embodied sexuality. For many years she guided and supported individuals, couples and groups across the planet to awaken consciousness in their sexuality and in their bodies, utilizing their sexual energy for personal and collective awakening.
Shakti understood that Sexual trauma can occur through the subtlest of means and that its impact on our individual lives and on society is vastly underestimated. Shakti had an intuitive and unique ability to listen to the songs being sung by these old wounds.
Shakti shared her wisdom on evolutionary sexuality and awakening the liquid body of light until she passed from this life in July 2017. May the power of her vision continue to shine its light out into the world.

Before he channelled She Who Is, South African born Shakti Malan obtained a PhD in Social Anthropology, unmasking the assumptions through which we interpret the lives of ‘others,’ inviting a deeper listening to what is said in the silences, gestures, subtle movements, and organizations of space from the perspective of an insider in tune with the texture of vastly different lived realities.
Dr Malan spent years fearlessly translating the challenges of vulnerable communities to decision makers in the fields of skills upliftment, economic development & sensitive environmental management, making a profound difference to the thousands of lives she touched through her dedication to improving the lives of the marginalised.
This quality of passionate service & devotion is what defined Shakti as a human being, and as a teacher of non-dualistic Advait Tantra & Sexual Awakening. She was TOTAL in everything she gave herself to. So, when the dolphins called her spiritual name, she didn’t hesitate to commit, taking herself off into the semi-arid Karoo to live alone for a time and empty out of all that would stand in the way of her being a clear channel for the evolution of embodied consciousness.
It was a challenging initiation out there in the wilderness, & she returned greatly aged in her body, & ancient in her soul. Sw. Rahasya, a dear teacher and friend, told her, ‘Now your teachings will be taken seriously, because you are no longer a pretty woman or precious princess. You have become the wise, powerful crone. You are ready to go out into the world to share what you know from the deep.’
Shakti, being the embodiment of the sacred feminine, orientated from the innate, sensed wisdom of her body; however, she was also an insatiable student & studied under some of the leading masters of our times, including Asha Salem, Bernie Prior, Dan Brulé, Lesley Templeton Thurston & Isaac Shapiro becoming a globally respected contemporary & teacher amongst teachers.
Her approach to Tantra is richly informed by her intellectual training as a Social Anthropologist, her work as a dance & movement teacher; as well as the Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, African Shamanic, & Advait Tantric traditions. She was also fascinated by the psychology of the unconscious, the somatic discoveries of the human nervous system, sexual shadow work, & neurochemistry.
Shakti’s ongoing explorations and teachings, her mystical communion with the liquid light bodies of the dolphins, & her personal journey with cancer opened a quantum awareness of the body’s true nature. Her great wisdom culminated in her writing a seminal workbook entitled Sexual Awakening for Women, which continues to catalyse women around the world into rediscovering the feminine principle in human sexuality as a vital, undirected life force energy, connecting us to the Earth & liberating consciousness.
Shakti understood that sexual trauma & shaming can occur through the subtlest of means & that its impact on our individual lives & on society is vastly underestimated. Shakti had an intuitive, unique ability to listen to the songs being sung by these old wounds, finding healing medicine songs & dances to bring them lasting peace.
Shakti realised the collective will only transform if individuals awaken to their true nature, & she had a gift & passion for supporting this realisation of truth in collectives of men & women alike. She shared her wisdom on evolutionary sexuality & the awakening of the body of light with all who showed up on her path. May the power of her vision continue to shine its light out into the world, now more so than ever before.
Adi Shakti.
Shakti’s Work in the World
She taught from the perspective of the Dakini, engaging powerfully with the student’s current chief obstacle to awareness, whatsoever that might be. She refined her group work, teaching several tantra retreats with her contemporaries at the time, groups with other Dakinis, and her own developments like the legendary Erotic and Beyond series of intensive workshops. It is from this considerable experience that Shakti described Totality Therapy and wrote her unparalleled guide/workbook Sexual Awakening for Women.
Realising that her teaching had relevance to a wide range of women, well beyond the relatively few on the path of Tantra, Shakti concentrated on making her work more generally accessible, taking a public (but not private) distance from the school she had co-founded, and being, unambiguously in her own right, a powerful teacher of women.
Parallel to her journey, Shakti qualified as a teacher of Biodanza and developed her own interpretation of that work, BlissDance, as a regular practice of connection with her students. Over the years Shakti led many multi-day retreats around the world, teaching Sexual Shadow Integration Work, Sexual Awakening for Women as well as BlissDance.
Her facilitation style was both compelling and provocative. It would be as if she was tracking, like a skilled hunter, your shadow sides, to help bring you back home to yourself. Always encouraging you to return to the breath and dissolving into the liquid body of love that is life.
Shakti’s impact reached worldwide. She personally visited and taught in France, Poland, Britain, Scotland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, California, Oregon, Colorado, Brazil, Mozambique …
Shakti and her work made a profound impact on many thousands of people while she was here and continues to do so through the teaching lineage she founded, headed by Rhianne van der Linde, principal of the Shakti Shiva Academy, Shakti’s beloved school and the present day home of her teachings.
*Totality Therapy is Shakti’s most comprehensive teaching and transmission on how to work with the psychological and mystical dimensions of sexuality.
Shakti also created a beautiful embodiment practice called BlissDance: a free-form dance practice to deepen embodiment of consciousness and true intimacy with life. BlissDance was designed to facilitate a deep dropping into the present moment.

Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook

Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook is the opus that Shakti Malan wrote as a synthesis of her deepest work with hundreds of women. The book was first published in 2012 in South Africa. It was written as an initiation into the deep mysteries of female sexuality – a journey within that emphasizes an opening to embodied bliss from the inside-out and allowing this bliss to ripple through the body as a deep relaxation and an ecstatic aliveness.
Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook is a handbook that can easily be used by women either on their own or in a group. Working through the book takes women on an intentional, experiential journey to awaken the flow of kundalini that connects sexual and heart energy, allowing women to taste again, and deeply enjoy, the bliss of female sexual energy.
Shakti believed that female sexual energy is a gateway to and a powerful vehicle for spiritual awakening. Women have a special role to play in the realization of this potential inherent in the sexual because it is the Feminine, though Her receptivity, that can lead the Masculine into the unknown… the mystery… that which is beyond the ego-mind.
There are a limited number of hard copies of the 1st edition of Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook still available. Should you wish to own a copy and live in South Africa, please contact info@shaktishiva.academy
